Sustainable Solutions

Plastic products have become essential in our day-to-day lives: their many positive properties (such as their light weight, durability, and longevity) contribute to our everyday well-being and comfort. In order to ensure that future generations may experience the positive impact our foam products have on their daily lives, we prioritise the integration of sustainability and circular economy principles into our operations.

Despite being active in very diverse industries our solutions are all based on the same principles: light weight, environment friendliness, high quality, stable performance and simplicity.

What makes our solutions sustainable?

  • Sustainable product design: prioritising the reduction of CO2 emissions and other negative environmental impacts.
  • Development of production processes: with continuous improvements in energy efficiency, our German, Hungarian and Italian factories use 100% renewable electricity
  • We monitor any possible impacts on human health
  • Participation in circular economy: our product portfolio includes bio-based and recycled raw materials, and we make sure that our products are recycled and reused

Bio-based – TR-EECell

Brand new, bio-based & cross-linked polyetylene foam, certified at the highest level!

Manufacturing foam is in the Nature of Trocellen. And Nature is our direction with our brand new innovative product: Trocellen TR-EECell represents a big step towards environmental sustainability.
TR-EEcell is our bio-based cross-linked polyolefin foam. The product contains raw materials derived from biomass (sugar cane). The process of exploiting the sugar cane usually involves five squeezing steps: The juice from the first two steps is destined for the production of brown sugar for human consumption, while the remaining three steps generate a less valuable juice and not suitable for the production of food sugar.

The ethanol necessary for our foam comes from fermented sugar cane juices extracted during the last three squeezing steps, therefore unsuitable for human consumption. From the polymerization of this ethanol the polymers necessary for the production of bio-based PE foam are obtained. Furthermore, even the remaining parts of the sugar cane are not wasted: the final residues of the juices (bagasse) are incinerated, thus producing energy used in the production process of sugar and ethanol and thus giving a further and significant contribution to sustainability.

DIN CERTCO BIO-BASE CERTIFICATION

All our existing types could have a portion of the “bio-based” resin in specific percentage, according to the recipes and the technical feasibility.
As we consider relevant to declare the non-fossil polyolefin resin part for the future responsible utilization of the products, we adopted the (3rd party) DIN CERTCO certification, in order to get stated what is the actual amount of that content of the specific TR-EEcell type, in the range of 20-50%, 50-85% or >85%.

As example, our TR-EEcell N and RN bio-based types are manufactured at >85% of Bio-based content.

TR-EECell is:

Bio sourced

Trocellen closed-cell polyethylene foam. Only the sources changed, the final result is the same.

Eco Friendly

Renewable and natural source supports the capture of CO2, avoiding pollution and fostering the fight against global warming.

High Performance

The product has the same technical features than other Trocellen polyethylene foam products.

Versatile

Suitable for several applications, due to its high quality and processability.

Certified

The bio-based content has been certified by accredited external laboratory according to ASTM D6866-16

Complete use

The processing waste from sugar cane is reused for the production of a long lasting product, increasing enormously the lifetime of the material.

Recycled raw material

Foams with recycled material content By using recycled materials, we can take part in the circular economy, so this is a top priority topic for Trocellen. Using recycled materials reduces the environmental impact of our foams in two ways:

  • the recycling of plastic waste is more environmentally friendly than extracting and refining petroleum, then turning it into plastic;
  • the recycled waste does not have to be incinerated or landfilled, so the associated pollution can be avoided.

Due to our manufacturing technology and the high product quality we provide, it is a major technical challenge to use recycled materials in foam production. Our team is doing its best to develop foam grades that have higher and higher quantities of recycled material and offer the widest possible range of sustainable products for our customers.

Halogen free foam

Health and safety for all: humans, wildlife, environment.

We make no compromise – starting from material development till the last day of use, and even beyond. Neither in safety, nor in quality.

Flame retardants are key components for foam production and are applied to our products for safety reasons: to prevent the start or slow down the growth of a fire! Today´s flame retardants have many variations, and Trocellen is already using the ethane type which is considered less critical than the other types: test results proves that the flame retardant we are using do not add dangerous components to the smoke released in a fire case (tested according to several norms of construction, marine and railway sector). This is already a step forward but not enough for our future!

HF – this stands for a novel Trocellen brand of flame retardant PE foams that are produced without any kind of halogen- (bromine, chlorine) or heavy metal containing compounds!

The new halogen free flame retardant product portfolio is already available for the Automotive industry (DIN 75200 with a rate of flame spread 75 mm/min) and many other applications. Please check your demand with our sales team!

Benefits

  • Keeps the original foam respective technical and mechanical properties, such as the long-lasting thermal stability, compression strength and low VOC values.
  • environmental friendly
  • does not contain any heavy metal such as antimony
  • in case of fire, it does not add any dangerous component to the smoke

Advanced Surface Treatment

The leading-edge surface technology by Trocellen

The chemical modification of the foam surface on the basis of environmentally friendly and safe substances ensures a significant increase in surface tension, which results in excellent long-term stability. Therefore, the AST treatment offers decisive advantages over conventional corona procedures.

Our surface finishing thus ensures optimum adhesion properties and perfect compatibility of the foam with many common water-based adhesives. AST-treated foam is the ideal basis for the manufacture of technologically sophisticated, self-adhesive products.

Benefits

  • Excellent adhesion properties
  • Increased long-term stability and long storability
  • Higher surface tension compared to corona treatment
  • No impairment of the mechanical properties of the foam
  • Environmentally friendly and emission-free
  • High process reliability
